Today, on International FIU Day, we celebrate the important work of Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) around the world and their contribution to the global fight against money laundering, terrorist financing and other financial crimes.
ECOFEL’s Commitment to FIU Excellence
As the training and capacity-building arm of the Egmont Group, the Egmont Centre of FIU Excellence and Leadership (ECOFEL) is committed to supporting FIU professionals through practical learning opportunities that strengthen operational effectiveness, professional knowledge and leadership.
The ECOFEL Certification Program (ECP)
One of ECOFEL’s key initiatives is the ECOFEL Certification Program (ECP), a professional eLearning program designed specifically with FIU personnel in mind.
Developed in collaboration with FIUs, subject matter experts and international partners, the ECP aims to provide a common foundation of knowledge for FIU staff while supporting continued professional development throughout their careers.
Key Milestones Achieved
Over the past year, the ECP has achieved several important milestones.
Course development has continued across foundational subject areas, with a growing catalogue of baseline certification modules covering topics such as FIU operational independence and autonomy, international AML/CFT standards and stakeholders, proliferation financing, predicate offences, FIU security and data protection and more.
The program has also benefited from extensive collaboration across the Egmont Group and beyond. FIUs from multiple regions have contributed to course reviews, technical validation and multilingual quality assurance efforts, helping ensure that content is accurate, relevant and applicable across diverse operational environments.
Looking Ahead
As development continues, ECOFEL remains focused on delivering a modern, accessible and globally relevant learning experience. The first phase of the baseline level of the ECOFEL Certification Program is scheduled to launch later in 2026, providing FIUs with new opportunities to strengthen professional knowledge and support the development of their personnel.
On this International FIU Day, ECOFEL thanks the many FIUs, international partners, subject matter experts and reviewers who have supported the development of the ECP and helped advance this important initiative.
The ECOFEL equally thanks the following donors for their continued support, which makes initiatives such as the ECP possible.
